Jay Nanavati Named To Super Lawyers “Top 100” Attorneys In Washington, DC List

Caroline Ciraolo Also Selected As A Leading Tax Lawyer in DC

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 26, 2023) – Super Lawyers has selected Jay R. Nanavati as one of its “Top 100” Washington DC Super Lawyers for 2023. Nanavati is ranked as a top white-collar criminal defense attorney by the rankings agency, but the “Top 100” list includes lawyers from various practice areas.

Super Lawyers notes that, “Each year, Super Lawyers recognizes the top lawyers in Washington DC via a patented multiphase selection process involving peer nomination, independent research, and peer evaluation. Washington DC lawyers who receive the highest point totals during this selection process are further recognized in Washington DC Super Lawyers Top Lists.”

Caroline D. Ciraolo has also been recognized by Super Lawyers for excellence in tax law. Super Lawyers describes itself as “a rating service of outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement.”

In 2022, 13 Kostelanetz attorneys, including 9 partners, were included on either the New York Metro, Washington DC, and/or Maryland annual Super Lawyers list. Additionally, Sharon L. McCarthy was named by Super Lawyers as one of the “Top 100” attorneys and one of the “Top 50 Women” lawyers in the New York Metro Area for 2022.

Nanavati and Ciraolo co-founded Kostelanetz & Fink’s Washington, D.C. office in 2017 and have built a national tax controversy and white-collar defense practice representing clients in complex and sophisticated civil federal and state tax controversies, including representation in sensitive audits, administrative appeals, and litigation in federal and state courts and administrative tax tribunals, providing related tax advice, conducting internal investigations, navigating domestic and foreign compliance options including voluntary disclosures, and representing individuals and entities in criminal tax and white collar investigations and prosecutions.

In addition to their Super Lawyers recognition, Ciraolo and Nanavati have both been recognized by Chambers USA for Tax Fraud – Nationwide and Tax – D.C. Both also have been repeatedly named to Best Lawyers, and in 2021, Best Lawyers named Ciraolo 2022 “Lawyer of the Year” for Litigation and Controversy – Tax in Washington, D.C. Ciraolo has also been named in Chambers’ top tier of lawyers for High Net Worth clients in the category of Tax: Private Client. Ciraolo currently serves as the American Bar Association Section of Taxation’s Vice Chair of Diversity, Membership, and Inclusion.

Nanavati is a veteran federal prosecutor, having served with the Justice Department’s Tax Division. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Ciraolo is also an alum of the Justice Department, having served from 2015 to 2017 as head of the Tax Division. Both are Fellows of the American College of Tax Counsel and active members of the ABA’s Section on Taxation.

Super Lawyers’ annual lists comprise a limited number of attorneys in each state who are chosen based on an evaluation of 12 indicators, including peer recognition and professional achievement in legal practice. Only 5 percent of applicant attorneys are chosen, according to Super Lawyers.
